Who are we?
We are a self-funding brass band based in Harwich, sponsored by the
local branch of the Royal British Legion and conform to the rules of the
central office of the Royal British Legion in London. We are currently
ranked 5th in the fourth section of the London & Southern Counties region.
Apart from the main band, we operate several subsidiary groups, including
the Corps of Drums, Apprentice Band, and the Harwich RBL Music
School.
Where do we rehearse?
We rehearse on Monday evenings from 7.30 to 10.00, at the comfortable and
licensed HQ of the Harwich Royal British Legion, Barrack Lane, Harwich.
Do we have a youth
policy?
Yes, most definitely. We always encourage young players, and run an
Apprentice band and music school on Saturday mornings at the Harwich
School, for the development of youth and novice players, which acts as a
feeder for the senior band. The popular beginner’s school involves
coaching for brass and percussion, music theory and a beginner’s brass
band. Younger children are taught to play the recorder. We follow strict
guidelines for child protection and our policy has been approved. The band
has a stock of instruments, and will endeavour to provide new players with
a suitable instrument if available. However demand for these are high, and
where an instrument cannot be provided, advice is given on where and how
one can be purchased.
Who is the Musical
Director?
Antony
Sanders was appointed as band MD in 1999. Prior to joining us, he played
euphonium in several championship section brass bands, and has won many
awards throughout southern England in recognition of his talent and
musicianship. His enthusiasm has had a positive effect on the band, which
is attracting many new players. He is very keen on youth
development, and it was through his vision that the apprentice band and
the beginner’s school were started. Antony is now a qualified
teacher with the ABRSM.
What sort of concerts do
we give?
We play a variety of concerts each year, mostly in the Tendring
peninsular, and are very proud to be part of the Royal British Legion. We
support the annual poppy appeal and other service association activities.
Our audiences are increasing, with many concerts now selling out.
Many of the band activities are based around the local maritime heritage
and each summer the band plays at Harwich Port for cruise ship departures.
Every few years we go on tour to a European destination, with past visits
to Spain, Belgium and France. We endeavour to try new experiences each
year, with no two years the same.
How can I join?
The band always welcomes new players. For the senior band, just come along
to a Monday evening rehearsal. If after several visits you decide to join
us, you will be required to fill out a few forms. There is also a monthly
membership subscription, payable by standing order, of £4 for adults and
£2 for under 18s and students. A condition of band membership is that you
become a member of the Royal British Legion, however the cost of this will
be met by the band, providing you maintain your monthly subscription
payments.
