DECLAN MEMORIAL CONCERT (30/05/08) |
Harwich Band have been supporting this concert since the death of Declan Heath aged 9, five years ago. It was thought this year that the Music School Band could take on this role.. The Concert was held on Monday evening at 7pm in Mayflower Primary School, Harwich. The programme consisted of the Music School Band, soloists, a jazz quartet and the junior drum corps from the Music School and a sizeable choir, soloists, rock band and the Friday Music Club from the Mayflower Primary School. The evening was a resounding success with standing room only in the school hall. An annual event in the Music School's calender is to present the Declan Heath Memorial Shield to the most improved player of the year and this year it was presented to a well deserved Chloe Jay aged 11, an up and coming front row cornet player. CONGRATULATIONS CHLOE keep up the good work. All monies raised at the concert will go to the Declan Heath Memorial Fund. |

MAKING MONEY in MAY!!!!! (30/05/08) |
If the Main Band have been quiet the Music School Band have definitely not. The Music School has been very busy practicing new peices and raising money. BOOT FAIR - On May 5th, a very sunny Bank Holiday morning, several adult helpers arrived at Clacton Airfield Boot Fair to set up a pitch to sell collected goods to raise money for the school. During the morning the sellers were joined by members of the Music School Band who then played for aproximately one and half hours. The buckets being shaken whilst the band played raised £79.00 and the stall raised £150.22 a total for the morning of £229.22. Well done everybody a SUPERB EFFORT. FUN RUN - On Sunday May 11th Peter Gibson age 11, who plays front row cornet/flugel in the Music School Band and 2nd/3rd cornet in Main Band, entered the annual Tendring Technology College Fun Run in Frinton and ran the 2 mile race in 18 minutes raising just over £80 for the Music school. Well done Peter. MAYFLOWER WALK - 9 members of Music School, comprising of parents, helpers and band personel entered the 14 mile Mayflower walk from Harwich to Manningtree on Sunday 25th May. They braved the atrocious weather to complete their challenge and raise money for the Music school. Congratulations everyone and we await the news of the total you have raised. |

Where have we been? (30/05/08) |
The band has been very quiet publicly over the first half of this year although we were working towards the Area Contests in March in Stevenage at which we suffered a bitter disappointment . After weeks and weeks of intense practice we arrived at the competition fairly sure that we had reached a qualifying standard. Our band were drawn first!!!! to play and produced a solid performance we thought worthy of a position. Obviously the adjudicator thought differently and after listening to over 20 bands put us in 13th place. We all travelled home dejected and deflated after all our efforts. |

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OUR VISITORS!! (01/01/08) |
EXAM RESULTS - We start the New Year with some excellent news. Several members of the Band School and the Main Band ended 2007 on a high as they all passed their respective Graded Examinations. From Band School, Tam, one of our new adult students, a self taught trombonist, passed Grade 4 Bass Trombone with Merit. Meridith aged 10 passed Grade 1 trumpet with a Merit. From the Main band, Matthew Harmer aged 14, one of our front row cornet players, passed Grade 5 Cornet with a Merit and Ed aged 12, a recent addition to our young 3rd Cornet bench passed Grade 3 Cornet with a Merit. WELL DONE EVERYONE!! CHRISTMAS CAROLS - Another high was our carolling through December. The band committed themselves to several venues for carolling including Morrisons at Harwich, Tescos at Highwoods Colchester, The Pubs of Harwich and The Masonic Lodge Clacton. For our efforts we were rewarded with takings of £2368 to be split equally between the Main Band and Band School Funds. A SUPERB EFFORT EVERYONE. TUBA BRASS LONDON - How did our Euph/Bari bench do in London? They surpassed themselves. Well wrapped up (it was very cold!!) they made their way to the North Steps of St. Paul's Cathedral (a change of venue from Somerset House) to await the arrival of the 200 'tuba' players. The numbers totalled 29 in the end and the five girls played the melody line along with two others. No pressure then under the baton of the LSO conductor!!! They were honored to represent the Harwich Band. We now eagerly await the announcement of the total raised for Gt Ormond St Hospital. |
